Basic Granny Square Pattern

Updated: Apr 13, 2020

If you've purchased a crochet kit with a 4mm or larger crochet hook, and a selection of hand spun and salvaged commercial yarns, then this pattern's for you!

However - for a real challenge, and to follow the path of an 8yr old being taught to crochet doilies in the 1960s, use a really small hook (max 2.5mm!) and some very fine crochet cotton, for a totally different Granny Square experience!

ch = chain

ss = slip stitch

tr = treble

ch-sp = chain space

Crafty Dog tip – look at the diagram below as you follow the written instructions 😊 – the coffee bean shapes are chains and the T with a line through is a treble!

With Yarn A, ch4, join with a ss into a ring Round 1 Ch3 (counts as tr), 2tr into ring, (ch2, 3tr into ring) 3 times, ch2, ss to top of beginning ch-3, fasten off. Round 2 Join Yarn B in any ch-sp with a ss. Ch3 (counts as tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr) into same space, (3tr, ch2,

3tr) in each of next 3 ch-2 spaces, ss to top of beginning ch-3, fasten off. Round 3 Join Yarn C in next corner space with a ss. Ch3 (counts as tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr) into same space, *skip 3 tr, 3tr into space before next group of 3-tr, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) into next ch-2 space; repeat from * twice more, 3tr into space before next group of 3-tr, ss to top of beginning ch-3, fasten off. Round 4 Join Yarn D in a corner ch-sp with a ss. Ch3 (counts as tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr) into same space, *(skip 3 tr, 3tr into space before next group of 3-tr) twice, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch-2 space; rep from * twice more, (skip 3 tr, 3tr into space before next group of 3-tr) twice, ss to top of beginning ch-3, fasten off. Weave in all ends.
